A few weeks ago, Yuri and I were invited to present a seminar about creating comics to 5th grade students at a local school. Yuri couldn’t be there, but made an awesome introductory video for me that you can see here:
I started out by giving the students a step-by-step tutorial on how to draw Matthew Tobias, the unwitting hero of my 95-page epic comic, “Burger Quest”. The students followed right along and ended up with some pretty cool renditions of Matthew Tobias. Next, I drew Matthew in a series of novel panels so that the students could get a feel for how a comic comes together.
The students got right to work letting their imaginations run wild as they created superhero comics of their own. I was so impressed with their hard work and creativity! Here are some sample pages of what the students came up with:
IMPRESSIVE, right?
Towards the end of the seminar, we had a chance to act out my comic, “The Bus Seat”. I played myself, and two of the students played the roles of the narrator and bus driver. The students really got into their roles and I think it helped them get excited for acting out their own finished comics!
I had a great time teaching the students how to create comics and I think its safe for me to say that the students really enjoyed it too! A big thank you to the 5th grade class and their teacher for inviting me in to do what I love most!
Stay comical!
Jason
